What's happening?

Something wicked this way comes! Something really dumb but also wicked! Daybreak will be visited by the Lil' Devil (also known as the Mad Batter) this month, with a plan to corrupt all the good little boys and girls of Daybreak to eeeevil.

What the heck is a Lil' Devil?

An incompetent daemon whose attempts to spread misery and punish people for their 'sins' are always beneficial to the target and politely offered, the Lil' Devil looks like a Halloween decoration and sounds like a Peter Lorre impression. He tries his best and has no idea he's not a terrifying horror. In the Zelda games in which he appears, he upgrades Link's abilities in ways he fails to realise help him out (such as allowing him to carry more items and laughing about all the junk he's hauling around now).

And what the heck is he doing?

He will be arriving to corrupt students to evil by encouraging them to prey on other students in acts of cruelty and humiliation (with a contest to scare other students, scoring a point if they record it and post it on the network). In an unexpected twist (which he will reveal beforehand), he will then punish (reward) the evilest students with terrible curses (prizes), all of which will be life-changing, horrific and ironic (inconsequential). He will also be ensuring students play by the rules, only scare people who have signed up and don't do anything dangerous (he's teaching them to be evil, not be bullies!).

If he actually knows it's Halloween or not is unclear.

How's it going to work?

I'll be running the Lil' Devil, though he won't be too directly related to the actual contest unless rule-breaking occurs. I'll put up a post with sub-headings for playing scare attempts and posts of them to go on the network. You are free to run NPCs for scare victims, so you can do post attempts, results or both. As for the contest itself?

Everyone who successfully scares anyone gets a punishment (prize), so just do what feels good. People who try and fail to scare someone will get nothing though. The "curses" will all be inadvertently beneficial but minor. They'll range from being strange items of dubious use to essentially useless powers that the recipient can ignore for the rest of their life. Each one will have a flimsy rationale as to why it's horrible.

ICly there will be a listing of the participants, with mugshots so everyone knows who are acceptable targets on sight.

When will this go down?

ICly, the last three days of October (29th-31st) will be when scares are valid for the contest, but I'll put the log up a bit earlier than that for convenience's sake. The three-day spread is to alleviate those bizarre 'time is fake' moments where characters are doing thousands of things in a single night.

What happens to Lil' Devil?

My ideal result is that because of his Halloweeny appearance and the fact he will literally be asking people to sign up to be a part of his evil scheme, no one will realise he's an interloper until he's already gone. Faculty assuming he's a student-run contest and students assuming he's a faculty event is what I was going for.

Contest Rules
1) Only scare others who have entered the competition. Scaring non-participants results in a minus point.
2) A scare only counts if a record of it is made public (photo or recording is fine). It is a point per victim, not per post, so mass scares are a quick way to gain points. There is no point consequence for being scared, however.
3) No violence! Threats of violence are acceptable. Attempting to injure a participant is a disqualification.
4) Students only! Students can help each other with their scares but faculty assistance is a disqualification.
5) The Lil' Devil retains the right to determine what constitutes a successful scare.
6) Have fun. It's mandatory. Failing to have fun is a disqualification. We want to hear some malevolent laughter at the fear of others out there!
