Warning! Incoming Player Plot? Another one?! Yes. Operation Anthem is Go.

What's that? Another player plot? Don't mind if I do. I suppose my timing could have been better, but alas. Though this one's a little bigger than a one-off event! This one's a three-parter that will take place over a couple of months. This post will be for the first two missions of this three mission storyline. Anyone and everyone are welcome to participate in the first two phases, and bonus points if you're a Candle, though being one is not at all necessary. All three missions will feature combat as a major component. It is not all fighting, though, and all power levels are welcome.

The plotting post for the third mission will go up after the completion of the second mission, which should be sometime in December, most likely. The first mission, Operation Anthem, will tentatively start on November 3. The second mission, Operation Icarus, is tentatively on December 8. The third mission... well, that should take place no later than Christmas. That can be a sticky time of year for people, so once the plotting post comes up for that, we can communicate about whether or not people will be actually be available to tag into it.

Now then, let's get down to brass tacks:

Operation Anthem

You know what Daybreak needs more of? Train heists. For all the roguish things our student body gets up to, heisting a train hasn't been something that's been done yet, and frankly, we need to fix that.

The leader of the Rune Guard organization Gunvolt belongs to, a guy by the name of Asimov, will be in contact with Daybreak. He is proposing a joint operation between QUILL and Daybreak Academy to destroy an AI Core located on a train in Eastern Europe, moving west toward Germany. The AI Core belongs to a Japanese corporation called the Sumeragi Group, who are very much your Evil Corporation types, headed by a corrupt and frankly evil Mage family. Asimov will reveal details about Sumeragi and their mission statement in the briefing, but the short version is that Sumeragi's vile ambitions have moved toward locating, detaining, and exploiting Candles for their powers and abilities. Worse, they've been quite successful at it as of late, and the AI Core on the train is part of why; and the fact that it has been moved out of Japan and toward Western Europe is a dangerous omen.

The AI Core, codenamed "Project Monarch," is vital in Sumeragi expanding its nefarious "Project Prometheus," and it acts as a locating sonar that resonates with an individual's Radiance. It must be removed from Sumeragi's hands by any means necessary, and the initial objective is destroying it without destroying the armored train it is carried on. Of course, things aren't going to be that simple... and recovery of the AI Core may, in fact, be quite preferable and something Gunvolt will advocate for.

Combat on this mission will consist primarily against Sumeragi goons, carrying a mixture of firearms, magical or runic weapons, and even some spells if so desired. There's no major boss fight on this mission, and this one serves as a very good opportunity for your characters to flex, and I highly encourage that. The only rule is "Don't destroy the damn train." What kind of cars and such are on the train? Well, it's not a passenger train, so there's none of those cars, but whatever else you need to make a cool setpiece? You can have it. Overall, consider this mission's danger level to be relatively mild or moderate and is more about being cool and heroic looking than anything.

The post will contain a briefing and Q&A from Asimov, a section for ops on board the train, and a conclusion area where characters will meet the AI Core.

The team can be made up of up to 4 students and either 1 or 2 faculty, plus Gunvolt.

Operation Icarus

Content Warning: Operation Icarus contains themes of exploitation, abuse, and torture, especially for the Rescue Team.

A month or so after recovering the AI Core, hereafter referred to as "Monarch," analyzing data provided to both QUILL and Daybreak will bear fruit, and it's big. So big that another joint operation between the two groups is quickly assembled; the holding location of captive Candles that are being used as part of Project Prometheus has been found. Moreover, the same site holds the computerized backups of Project Monarch. While Sumeragi has been unable to replace the Monarch AI Core so far, destroying those servers will go a long way to making sure their progress remains hindered.

This mission requires two teams: one team to rescue the captured Candles in the highly secured basement of the facility, while the other team goes to the upper levels to destroy the servers containing Project Monarch's backups. The combat threat level on this mission is high. There will be a Boss Fight at the end of each route. What are they? I'm not going to tell you. You'll have to enjoy the surprise. On the way, however, more Sumeragi goons exist to be styled upon, though they'll be tougher and better equipped than the ones on the previous operation.

It is recommended that the rescue team consists of 1 Faculty and up to 4 Students, and the Server Room team consist of 1 Faculty and up to 3 Students, plus Gunvolt.

The results of the op will see the servers successfully destroyed, and the Rescue team successful in liberating a fairly substantial number of Candles held imprisoned in the facility. Most of them are injured, exhausted, malnourished, and just in general in a bad place thanks to Sumeragi all but literally milking them for their power. They will require immediate medical attention, and Daybreak's Rune Wings are on standby for field triage.

Of course, while all looks like it will go well, there's some ominous sounding thunder rolling in the distance. There will be an additional prompt that appears at the end of the event, which will lead into the third mission.

Notes:

Quite a mouthful, I know. And I appreciate you sticking around until this point. So here's how I plan to run things, seeing as how events tend to peter out with resolution sometimes, and I'm aiming to prevent that:

1) Combat against any goons in Mission 1 and 2 are pretty much free-for-all. Go wild. I'll NPC goons if you need them, or anyone playing can do it too. They're goons, they don't get a say. Simply note in your top levels if you want goons NPC'd or not!
2) For mission 1, I will provide all the parts at the same time: briefing, combat, and meeting Monarch, all on Day One. This might make for a lot of tagging for everyone, but I'd like everyone to participate in things straight away rather than drag it out too long so it dies. For Mission 2, the briefing, general combat, and Boss Fights will go up on Day One, and the Resolution thread will go up on Day Three or Four (or earlier if the boss fights somehow finish quickly). My main focus will be on briefing and Bosses during that time and General Combat is for Flexing.
3) As such, I'm declaring this now: Do not worry about timelines from combat to resolution. If you're worried about that, decide what you want early, and then lean into it in the resolution thread and we'll work it into the combat thread later. The timeline in these plots do not have to be perfect so don't stress out about it. It's the only way to get some sort of conclusion quickly.
4) For boss fights I will be advancing the threads once every day minimum. If you can't tag or can't work with it, that's okay. PM me either on plurk, Discord, or even DW if you just want me to skip you on a round voluntarily. These fights are here to be fun and cool, and victory is a foregone conclusion. Going back to Number 3, don't worry about timelines too much. Make a cool resolution and make a cool fight, have fun.

So, with all that said, this post will act as a signup post for missions 1 and 2. I'll also have a questions section. Hit me up if you have any, and I'll happily answer. You can sign up to both missions, if you're so inclined.

I will update this top level with the teams as they request to join. If there's actually more interest than I expect, I'll gladly try to accommodate. Seriously, thank you for reading, and hopefully you'll all enjoy what I have in mind.
