The Collision of Thunderstorms - OOC Plotting Thread

Well. All of that sure happened, didn't it?

While Operation Anthem and Operation Icarus were highly successful, there's a rather large loose end that needs wrapping up. Nothing big, just dealing with a megalomaniac with a massive villain complex that was the one that shot Gunvolt. Details for the results of the missions and what's next inside.

Also, there are some warnings in here discussing violence and some mental health issues, so be warned of that.

Okay, well. First I'll start with some wrapup of Operation Icarus:

Candle Rescue

Seventy different Candles were rescued from the Stratacombs, all in various shapes of Bad, and Daybreak brought them back to safety to get them treated. Some may stay at the Academy, others... may want to go home. Such a thing's probably a bad idea, because Sumeragi knows very well who they are now, and will probably try to abduct them again if given a chance. Notably, Sumeragi seems to have prioritized targets that might be harder to miss: orphans, vagrants, shut-ins, homeless, or people with little to no family they're in regular contact with. There may be an occasional higher profile Candle taken, but most of them would be cases where they were people that were easier to miss or cover up. A lot of their lives are effectively ruined, and they're going to need to rebuild, but at least now they have that chance to pick up the pieces.

Elise, The Eternal Envy

Elise, the Sumeragi Glaive Soldier, codenamed "Eternal Envy," was present in the deepest depths of the Stratacombs. Thanks to the valiant efforts of Rex, Adelaide, and Professor Kiske, they managed to subdue Elise rather than kill her, disabling her Glaive Suit's remote kill switch, thus saving her from Sumeragi and from herself. For now, Elise seems to have merged back together from her split, with the shyer personality being the one in control, for now. She practically clung to the team that saved her on the way back to campus... thanking them profusely and constantly apologizing for hurting any of them.

She is now being treated in the medical wing, having reluctantly agreed to be treated for her physical wounds and psychological trauma. It seems during captivity, she developed a form of Dissociative Identity Disorder, which Sumeragi exploited viciously in an attempt to better weaponize Elise's natural powers. The intent was to replace her initial, shy, timid, and passive personality with something more commanding and aggressive, which Sumeragi would, in theory, control. It didn't quite work out that way, instead making both personalities be able to manifest at the same time, and the control Sumeragi thought they had wasn't as strong as they guessed.

Her powers, after analysis, are pointedly strange, and that's probably why Sumeragi kidnapped her and converted her into a Glaive Soldier. She's a Candle, and obviously had the ability to have both of her personalities exist at once. But rather oddly, her Radiance is akin to a blightless form of necromancy and darkness element. One of her other abilities lets her channel that dark power into her gaze, much like a Gorgon. Looking into her eyes while this is active can paralyze, even temporarily petrify, opponents. While not as powerful as the infamous Medusa's gaze, this ability is quite dangerous. On top of that, her power is strong enough to revive her other personality if one of them dies in combat; the practical application makes her insanely hard to kill in a straight fight unless you manage to off both at once. Fortunately, Elise doesn't want to hurt anyone, much less the people who saved her, so any fears about these powers becoming a problem are mercifully unfounded.

Elise is still easily spooked, and she suffers badly from her horrific experience, on top of already being naturally shy and anxious around people. Still, she's agreed to counseling, therapy, and medical treatment. It will be some time before she's cleared mentally to be around the campus on her own, but she can accept visitors, and she greatly appreciates anyone who brings her some video games to play, which turned out to be her hobby before Sumeragi abducted her. There may come a time that she decides to help Daybreak of her own volition, but for now, she's been given a shot at life again that she had long since given up hope of.

Gunvolt, Monarch, and the Elephant in the Room:

So yeah. Gunvolt got up and betrayed by his father-figure/mentor/boss, Asimov, who shot him twice with the intent to kill, left him for dead, and kidnapped Monarch's AI Core for his own undoubtedly nefarious purposes. All that's bad. Probably should do something about it.

When Gunvolt wakes up, he's going to be pissed, once he recovers from the shock that he's somehow still alive. Saved, oddly enough, by the pendant Desidera had given him as a gift. Gunvolt will eventually reveal who shot him, and will immediately want to start planning an operation to get Monarch back before it's too late. Suspecting Asimov had a plan if he refused to join him, Gunvolt will contact a fellow QUILL agent by the name of Xiao Wu. GV believes he can trust Xiao, with him being part of a different branch of QUILL away from Asimov, and through him, he'll get an idea of Asimov's whereabouts.

Immediately following the events of Operation Icarus, some of the German QUILL branch's agents had been buzzing around what was an old, abandoned communications tower. Mothballed many years ago, the tower is in a remote enough area that it can be worked on without suspicion... and it seems like Asimov has plans for it. Notably, he intends to boost the power of that old comms tower to an absurd degree, and hook Monarch up to it, using her song to potentially locate every Candle within thousands of miles; something would've been the holy grail to Sumeragi if they figured out how to do it, much less without attracting attention. Gunvolt can only surmise that Asimov has figured out how to do it, and doesn't give a damn if it's detected. Either way, if successful, it's a good bet that Asimov plans to indoctrinate those Candles into QUILL, and make them receptive to Asimov's twisted world view, one way or another.

The mission will be quick and dirty: send in a team to the broadcast tower, neutralize Asimov by any means necessary, and once again retrieve Monarch's AI Core. It will just be a brief introduction, and then the boss fight against Asimov, followed by the fallout of it. Gunvolt is more than ready to put down Asimov like a rabid dog if he must.

The Boss Fight Itself is against an extremely powerful opponent in Asimov. He himself is a Candle, and as it turns out, an exceptionally strong one... and one that somehow possesses the exact same powerset as Gunvolt himself. GV will warn ahead of time what he saw, and thus the team should be expected to have plenty of lightning resistance gear if they don't want to get fried. Gunvolt doesn't know the extent of his powers, but Asimov possesses almost every trick in the book that GV does: the Flashfield, several special skills like Astrasphere, Dragonsphere, Crashbolt, and Voltaic Chains. Asimov doesn't bother to use a tagging system like GV's Dart Leader, simply because he doesn't really need it. Worse yet, Asimov also knows the Prevasion skill that Gunvolt does; hitting him with individual attacks might be hard, as he can seemingly shift his entire molecular structure around attacks. Prevasion is aggravating, but it can be punched through with enough repeated attacks in quick succession, or by overloading it with a significant enough impact. Powerful AoE attacks are more likely to get through Prevasion, for example. Many of these might be unpleasant surprises in character, as Gunvolt doesn't know exactly what Asimov has up his sleeve; but knowing about them in advance out of character is important, because they doubtlessly will come up, and clever characters can piece together this quickly.

Expect Asimov to primarily use his lightning powers, but he's also more than a proficient user of firearms too. For this fight, Gunvolt will warn that he's packing a revolver and an anti-materiel rifle. The former is known to shoot Orichalcum rounds that can punch through defensive magical screens, though it is unknown how many bullets of that kind he has. As the material is rare and expensive, one can assume his supply is limited, or he would've shot Gunvolt with two of them. The latter fires custom rounds, some of which might be magical in nature. Gunvolt knows at least of lightning rounds he's used in the past to disable electronics, security systems, and Sumeragi robots. The rifle might come with other elemental bullets in addition to standard cartridges, but Gunvolt doesn't actually know. It turns out, Asimov kept a lot of his cards to his chest.

So. Pack your best gear and expect a rough battle. Asimov will not hesitate to kill if given a chance; he's actually quite brutally ruthless at his core.

For signups, the mission will include Gunvolt, Desidera, and 2/3 students, and 1/2 faculty if there's interest. Tentatively, expect the event to take place on December 16.

There are some rather specific things that, per canon, can just outright ignore and temporarily disable prevasion, but I think we'll leave you to figure those out, eh? All I'm gonna say about it is it's not anything that Desidera is presently capable of.
